Wedding Photographer at The Secret Garden, Ashford

I’m James, a Documentary wedding photographer based in Ramsgate. The Secret Garden is about thirty minutes from me and it’s a venue I know well. If you’re getting married here and want photography that captures everything honestly and beautifully, get in touch to check availability.
There’s something genuinely magical about The Secret Garden. From the moment you step through the gate, the outside world drops away — you’re somewhere else entirely. Lush greenery, open sky, the quiet hum of a venue that was made for celebration. As a wedding photographer based in Kent, I’ve photographed at some of the county’s best venues, and The Secret Garden in Ashford is one that always stays with me.
The venue suits the way I work. I photograph weddings in a documentary style — quietly, honestly, without interrupting the day. The Secret Garden gives you space, atmosphere and light in abundance. The kind of setting where you don’t need to manufacture moments, because they keep happening on their own.

About The Secret Garden, Ashford
The Secret Garden is an outdoor wedding venue tucked away in the Kent countryside near Ashford. It’s the kind of place that couples choose when they want something personal and completely removed from the generic hotel wedding circuit — somewhere with genuine character, genuine beauty, and the freedom to make the day their own.
The venue centres on a beautifully maintained garden with an outdoor ceremony space, a warm and intimate atmosphere, and surroundings that change with the light and the seasons. It’s particularly suited to smaller, more intimate celebrations — the kind where every guest matters and the couple want to feel close to the people they’ve invited.
It’s a venue with a distinct identity. Not a country house hotel, not a converted barn, not a marquee in a field — something more particular than any of those. Couples who choose it tend to know exactly what they want from a wedding, and The Secret Garden delivers it.
What Makes The Secret Garden Great for Photography
The short answer is light and atmosphere. The outdoor setting means you’re working with natural light throughout the day — no windowless function rooms, no overhead spots fighting against you. The garden itself provides extraordinary backdrops: lush greenery, open sky, soft filtered light through the canopy. Everything a photographer needs.
The golden hour at The Secret Garden is exceptional. As the sun drops in the late afternoon, the light turns warm and directional, and the garden glows in a way that makes portrait photography feel effortless. I took Ruth and Tristan out during golden hour at their wedding here and the images from those thirty minutes are some of the best I’ve produced anywhere.
The intimate scale of the venue is also an asset. At a smaller wedding, you’re closer to everything. The emotions are more visible, the moments less diluted, the photographs more direct. The Secret Garden encourages that kind of celebration.

Photographing a Wedding at The Secret Garden
I photographed Ruth and Tristan’s wedding here — an intimate celebration with thirty of their closest family and friends. It was one of those days that reminded me why I love wedding photography.
Ruth prepared nearby at Pretty Prep Studios, and from the moment I arrived there was a quality to the day that felt completely intentional. Every detail had been considered. The ceremony took place outside in the garden, with a string quartet playing as Ruth walked out. The setting was genuinely cinematic — but what made it work was that it was completely real. No staging, no performance. Just two people getting married in a beautiful place they loved.

The Secret Garden Ashford — Wedding Photographer FAQs
Do you photograph many weddings at The Secret Garden in Ashford?
I’ve photographed at The Secret Garden and it’s a venue I know and love. It suits my documentary style particularly well — the outdoor setting, the natural light, the intimate atmosphere. If you’re getting married here, I’d love to hear from you.
What is The Secret Garden like for wedding photography?
Exceptional. The outdoor setting means you’re working with natural light all day, which is what documentary photographers live for. The garden provides a wealth of natural backdrops, and the golden hour light is among the best I’ve experienced at any Kent venue. It’s a photographer-friendly venue in every sense.
Is The Secret Garden suitable for smaller, more intimate weddings?
It’s one of its greatest strengths. The venue has an inherently intimate atmosphere that suits smaller celebrations perfectly. I photographed a thirty-guest wedding here and it was one of the most personal, moving days I’ve been part of. The scale of the venue makes it feel warm and personal rather than grand and formal.
How far in advance should I book a wedding photographer for The Secret Garden?
Twelve to eighteen months is a safe guide for peak season. Summer weekends at popular Kent venues book up quickly, and The Secret Garden is no exception. That said, I do occasionally have availability at shorter notice, so it’s always worth getting in touch even if your date is closer. I’ll always come back to you quickly.
What is your wedding photography style?
Documentary. I photograph weddings the way a good journalist covers a story — quietly, truthfully, and without getting in the way. I’m not there to direct a photoshoot. I’m there to watch the day unfold and make sure nothing worth keeping goes undocumented. The Secret Garden is a brilliant venue for this approach because it generates its own atmosphere and energy.
Are you based near Ashford?
I’m based in Ramsgate in East Kent, about thirty minutes from Ashford. I cover the whole of Kent and the South East, so wherever your wedding is, I’m happy to travel. No travel surcharges within Kent.
