About Winters Barns

There aren’t many wedding venues where I can say, hand on heart, that every single wedding I’ve shot there has gone brilliantly. Winters Barns is one of them.

It’s not luck. It’s the team.

When I arrive at Winters Barns — and I always get there early — I’ll usually be met by Soph, Lizzie, or Sally within minutes. There’s a hug, a Diet Coke appears from somewhere, and I’ll have a quick chat in the office to see if there’s anything I need to know about the day. That kind of relationship between a photographer and a venue team makes a real difference to how a wedding day flows.

What I notice most, as someone who’s shot at dozens of venues across Kent, is how gently and seamlessly the Winters Barns team guides couples through the day. Nobody feels rushed. Nobody feels anxious about timing. Couples just get to enjoy themselves, because everything is being quietly taken care of. That’s rarer than it should be.

The team even looks out for the photography. If there’s a good sunset on the horizon and I want to push the first dance back ten minutes to make the most of the light, they’ll often suggest it before I even ask. That kind of collaboration makes a real difference to the photos couples end up with.

Scott Anderson catering handle the food, and Chloe and the team there are just as brilliant — relaxed, professional, and genuinely invested in making the day special.

The venue itself is set in beautifully kept gardens with real character — the kind of outdoor space that photographs well in every season and always has something interesting happening in the light.

What makes Winters Barns special as a wedding venue

Winters Barns is genuinely historic — the original farmhouse and the smaller of the two barns date back to around 1660, with the larger barn added in the 1750s. The buildings are 85% original, which means proper oak beams, characterful stonework, and the kind of atmosphere you simply can’t build from scratch.
As a photographer, the open-plan layout is one of my favourite things about the venue. I can move between the ceremony, the drinks reception in the gardens, and the reception room in seconds. Nothing gets missed.
The gardens have real character too, and on a clear evening, the open grounds to the west of the buildings give you beautiful golden light during portrait time.
The getting-ready space — the salon, originally the farm’s stables — is one of the better ones I’ve worked in. Good natural light, enough room for the photographer alongside hair and makeup, and it doesn’t feel cramped even with a full bridal party. The couple’s cottage (a converted cattle shed, done beautifully) means the couple can stay on site, which always makes the morning of the wedding calmer and more relaxed.

A woman applies makeup to another woman seated in a tall chair, preparing her for a Kent wedding. The bride-to-be is wearing white pajamas and fluffy slippers. The room, with its peach-colored wall, beige couch, and decorative clock above a closed door, exudes cozy charm. Image by Pearce Wedding Photography.

Winters Barns FAQs

Is Winters Barns an exclusive use venue?

A: Yes — Winters Barns operates on an exclusive use basis, meaning your wedding is the only event at the venue on your date. That makes a real difference to how relaxed the day feels, and it means there are no strangers wandering through your photos.

How many weddings does Winters Barns hold per week?

A: Winters Barns is selective about the number of weddings they take on, which is part of why the team feel so present and invested on the day. It’s worth asking them directly when you enquire, but you’ll never feel like you’re on a conveyor belt.

What is the capacity at Winters Barns?

A: Up to 150 guests for the ceremony and reception. It works just as well for 60 guests as it does for 150 — the spaces scale well and never feel empty or overcrowded.

Is there accommodation at Winters Barns?

A: There’s limited on-site accommodation for the couple and close family. For guests, Canterbury is a 10-minute drive and has a wide range of hotels — the team at Winters Barns will usually point you towards options they trust.

What is the getting ready space like at Winters Barns?

A: The bridal prep space in the farmhouse is one of the better ones I’ve worked in — good natural light, enough room for the photographer, hair and makeup, and a group of bridesmaids without it feeling chaotic. That matters more than most couples realise when they’re planning the day.
