Wedding Photographer at Cooling Castle Barn, Rochester
I’m James, a Kent wedding photographer. I work in a documentary style — photographing quietly and honestly, without directing. Cooling Castle Barn is about forty minutes from my base in Ramsgate, set on the Hoo Peninsula north of Rochester — and it’s genuinely one of the most unique settings I’ve photographed at.

The combination of a beautifully restored barn with the backdrop of actual medieval castle ruins creates something that no other venue in Kent can offer. The team who work here are incredible too, the day’s run very smoothly.

About Cooling Castle Barn
Cooling Castle Barn sits in the shadows of the ruins of Cooling Castle — a 14th-century medieval castle on the Hoo Peninsula in North Kent. The barn itself is beautifully restored, blending historic character with the warmth and practicality of a modern wedding venue. The castle ruins provide a backdrop unlike anything else in the county, giving every outdoor photograph a dramatic, genuinely historic quality.
The venue suits couples who want something with real character and a sense of place. The grounds and ruins are yours to explore, and the contrast between the warmth of the barn interior and the ancient stonework outside creates a genuinely dynamic setting throughout the day.
What Makes Cooling Castle Barn Great for Photography
The castle ruins. That’s the honest answer. There is nowhere else in Kent where you can photograph a couple against the backdrop of a 14th-century medieval castle, and the effect is extraordinary. The ancient stonework, archways, and weathered stone walls create portrait opportunities that feel genuinely cinematic.
The barn itself photographs beautifully in every season. The warm tones of the restored timbers, the natural light through the windows, and the intimate scale of the space make for lovely ceremony and reception images. Outside, the contrast between the manicured venue grounds and the dramatic castle ruins gives real variety throughout the day.

Photographing a Wedding at Cooling Castle Barn
I arrive early and spend time with the castle ruins before guests arrive — understanding the light, finding the best angles, working out where I want to take the couple during golden hour. The ceremony in the barn has an intimate, warm character and I photograph it from multiple positions without disrupting the atmosphere.
After the ceremony, the castle ruins are the priority. During drinks and the bridal party portraits, the ruins provide a backdrop that couples love and guests photograph constantly. By the time golden hour arrives and the light turns warm and low against the ancient stone, the images that come from that twenty minutes are consistently among the strongest of the day.
