I’m James, a Kent wedding photographer. Cooling Castle Barn is the only venue in Kent where I can photograph a couple in front of a real 14th-century castle, then walk them back into a 17th-century barn for dinner.
The team here are brilliant too. The days run smoothly, which leaves me free to chase the light.
About Cooling Castle Barn
Cooling Castle Barn is in the village of Cooling, about six miles north of Rochester on the Hoo Peninsula. The barns date back to the 17th century and sit right next to the ruins of Cooling Castle, built in the 1380s by John Cobham.
There are three barns, each with its own job. Guests gather for drinks in the Heritage Barn, you marry in the Fathom Barn and dinner is in the high-beamed Tithe Barn. They’re all wrapped in walled gardens, and it’s one wedding per day, so the place is yours.
What makes Cooling Castle Barn different?
A real castle. The gatehouse and ruins of a medieval castle, right next to the venue. Nowhere else in Kent has that.
Three barns, one flow. Drinks, ceremony and dinner each have their own space, so the day moves naturally without anyone flipping a room.
Walled gardens. Sheltered, green and private, ideal for drinks and group photos.
One wedding a day. No crossover with anyone else’s party.
Photographing a Wedding at Cooling Castle Barn
I get there early and walk the ruins before anyone arrives, working out where the light will be when it matters.
The ceremony in the Fathom Barn is warm and close, so I can work quietly without getting in anyone’s way. Straight after, the castle gates are the priority. Bridal party portraits there look incredible, and guests can’t stop photographing them either.
At the wedding I shot here, the couple swapped a traditional cake for a doughnut tower and fed each other doughnuts, and the first dance happened under fairy lights in the barn. Before that, we slipped out at sunset for portraits in the field, with the warm light low across the old stone.
