VENUE GUIDE

Wedding Photographer at Westerham Golf Course, Kent

Bride with bridesmaids holding bouquets

I’m James, a Kent wedding photographer. I work in a documentary style — photographing quietly and honestly, without directing. Westerham Golf Course is about thirty minutes from me and it’s a venue I know well. If you’re getting married here and want photography that captures your day naturally and beautifully, get in touch to check my availability.

Westerham Golf Course sits in the heart of the Kent countryside — rolling grounds, open sky, and a sense of real seclusion despite being easily accessible from London and the coast. It’s one of those venues that works beautifully for weddings precisely because it wasn’t originally designed as one. It’s a proper golf course, which means manicured grounds, genuine character, and the kind of natural setting that photographs beautifully without needing to be styled.

I’ve photographed at Westerham and it’s a venue I genuinely enjoy working at. The combination of open grounds, outdoor ceremony space, and a setting that feels genuinely removed from the everyday makes it ideal for documentary wedding photography. You get space, atmosphere, and light in abundance.

About Westerham Golf Course

Westerham Golf Course is set in the West Kent countryside near the village of Westerham, one of the county’s most characterful corners. The venue combines the manicured grounds of a working golf course with a function space designed for celebrations. It’s a genuinely picturesque setting — rolling fairways, woodland edges, and views across the Weald that shift throughout the day as the light changes.

The venue accommodates a range of wedding sizes, with an outdoor ceremony space overlooking the grounds and a reception area with windows that frame the landscape. Because it’s built around the golf course itself, there’s a real sense of space and seclusion, even though the venue is only minutes from the village and accessible from the main roads.

The appeal is straightforward: couples choose Westerham because they want something genuinely beautiful, genuinely quiet, and genuinely removed from the generic wedding venue circuit. The grounds do much of the work for you.

What Makes Westerham Great for Photography

The landscape is the obvious answer, but it’s more than just the views. Westerham sits in genuine countryside, which means you’re working with natural light throughout the day — no overhead lighting fighting against you, no artificial flash-lit spaces. The grounds themselves provide an infinite number of backdrops: open fairways, woodland edges, hedgerows, the clubhouse with its views. The light moves across all of it throughout the day.

The outdoor ceremony space is particularly strong photographically. Being outside means natural light, genuine atmosphere, and the landscape as your backdrop rather than four walls. By the golden hour — late afternoon — the light across the grounds is exceptional. Long shadows, warm colour, and that quality of light that makes every image feel editorial rather than documentary.

The scale and seclusion also work in the photographer’s favour. The venue is spacious enough that you’re not jostling for position, but intimate enough that moments are still visible and genuine. You can work quietly, stay close, and capture real things happening.

Photographing a Wedding at Westerham Golf Course

I work in a documentary style — which means I’m there to watch and record, not to direct. Westerham suits this approach because the venue itself generates its own atmosphere. The outdoor ceremony, the grounds around you, the views in every direction — it all creates conditions for genuine, relaxed photography. I arrive early, stay close through the day, and make sure nothing worth keeping goes undocumented.

For couple portraits, Westerham offers exceptional options. The grounds provide dozens of different backdrops within a few minutes’ walk — open fairway, woodland, hedgerows, views across the Weald. I usually aim for the golden hour window during the reception, when the light is at its warmest and the couple are at their most relaxed. The results from that window — late afternoon light across the grounds, with the couple in the landscape — are consistently some of my strongest work.

Westerham weddings tend to have a quality of peace and beauty to them that comes through in the photographs. The venue attracts couples who care about the details and the setting, and that always makes for stronger images.

Westerham Golf Course — Wedding Photographer FAQs

Have you photographed at Westerham Golf Course before?

Yes — I’ve photographed at Westerham and it’s a venue I know well. The grounds, the light at different times of year, the outdoor ceremony space — all of it. It’s a genuinely beautiful venue and always a pleasure to work at.

Is Westerham Golf Course good for outdoor ceremonies?

Absolutely. The outdoor ceremony space overlooks the grounds and is one of the venue’s real strengths. You’re outside, surrounded by landscape rather than walls, with genuine natural light and atmosphere. It photographs exceptionally well.

Can you do portrait photography in the grounds at Westerham?

Yes — and I’d strongly encourage it. The grounds provide an enormous range of different backdrops, from open fairway to woodland to hedgerow. With the right timing — usually the golden hour window during the reception — you can get images that genuinely showcase the venue and the landscape.

How far in advance should I book a photographer for Westerham?

Twelve to eighteen months is a reasonable guide for peak season. Summer weekends at venues this calibre book up quickly. That said, I do sometimes have availability at shorter notice — it’s always worth getting in touch to check, whatever your timeline.

What is the capacity at Westerham Golf Course?

Westerham can accommodate a range of wedding sizes, from smaller intimate celebrations to larger full-scale weddings. If you’re looking at a specific guest count, the venue can advise on space and layout options.

Are you based near Westerham?

I’m based in Ramsgate in East Kent, about thirty minutes from Westerham. I cover the whole of Kent and the South East, including the Surrey and Sussex borders. No travel surcharges within Kent.

Looking for a Photographer?

If you’re getting married at Westerham Golf Course and you want photography that captures the day honestly and beautifully — the ceremony in the grounds, the golden hour light, the quiet moments, the celebration — I’d love to hear from you.
