Wedding Photographer at Port Lympne
I’m James, a Kent wedding photographer. I work in a documentary style — photographing quietly and honestly, without directing. Port Lympne is about forty minutes from my base in Ramsgate, and it’s a venue unlike anything else in Kent.

Set within a 600-acre wildlife reserve near Hythe, the scale and setting here are genuinely extraordinary — and the Moroccan garden for portraits is one of the most visually stunning spaces I’ve photographed in.

About Port Lympne
Port Lympne is set within the Port Lympne Hotel and Reserve — 600 acres of wildlife reserve on the Kent hillside above Hythe. The venue combines a beautiful historic house with exceptional outdoor spaces, a huge Orangery tent canopy for the reception, and the unique backdrop of an active wildlife reserve. This is not a conventional venue experience, and that’s precisely what makes it so memorable.
Couples have a choice of how much of the reserve they incorporate into their day. You can arrive in style, take your guests on a safari truck ride through the reserve at sunset, or simply use the gardens and grounds. The Moroccan garden for bridal party portraits is stunning — textured walls, arched features, warm tones and a completely unique atmosphere that produces some of the most striking images of any wedding day.
What Makes Port Lympne Great for Photography
There are a few venues in Kent where I know before I arrive that the images are going to be extraordinary. Port Lympne is one of them. The Moroccan garden is the headline — the textures, colours, and architectural detail create a portrait setting that you simply won’t find anywhere else in the county. I always make a point of spending time there during the drinks reception.
The Orangery tent reception space is huge and beautifully lit. The grounds and hillside setting offer sweeping views across the Kent countryside. And if the weather is right at golden hour, the combination of the reserve landscape, the warm light, and the hillside backdrop creates something genuinely special. If your guests are on the safari truck at sunset, the energy and joy that creates is wonderful to photograph.

Photographing a Wedding at Port Lympne
Getting ready usually happens in the hotel, which is well-appointed and gives me good light to work with in the morning. The ceremony is in the grounds, and after the vows we head to the Moroccan garden for drinks and portraits. I always aim to get bridal party portraits in the Moroccan garden early — it can occasionally be closed for afternoon tea service, so it’s worth confirming access with the venue in advance.
The Orangery tent reception is a great space for the evening — the scale of it means even a large wedding feels alive and full rather than stretched. And if you’re doing the safari truck at sunset, the light and the setting and the sheer joy on your guests’ faces makes for some of the most candid and genuine photography of the day.
