The Old Kent Barn Wedding Photographer
I’m James, a Kent wedding photographer. I work in a documentary style — photographing quietly and honestly, without directing. The Old Kent Barn is about twenty minutes from my base in Ramsgate, and there’s a moment when I pull up there, usually early, when I know the day is going to be brilliant. Not because every wedding here is the same — they’re not — but because I know the team, and the team here are genuinely exceptional.

About The Old Kent Barn
A lot of Kent barns are cold, dark, and feel more like a working farm building than a wedding venue. The Old Kent Barn is none of those things. It’s bright, open, and beautifully finished — the kind of space that photographs well at every point in the day, from the morning light coming through the windows to the warm glow of the evening reception.
Outside, the Pavilion and gardens are genuinely lovely — particularly for ceremonies in the warmer months, surrounded by roses and open sky. In winter, with a Christmas tree filling the barn and a roaming band weaving through the guests, it becomes something else entirely. Alpacas occasionally make an appearance at the drinks reception too. Yes, really.
A Venue That Actually Has Your Back
Ashleigh is, without question, one of the best wedding coordinators I’ve worked alongside in Kent. She anticipates things before they become problems, keeps the day flowing without anyone feeling pushed or rushed, and genuinely cares about every couple. Chloe is just as brilliant. The cheesecake, by the way, is extraordinary.
What this means in practice is that I can focus entirely on photographing your day mostly in a Documentary way. There’s no chasing people, no hunting down the coordinator, no worrying about whether things are running late. It’s all being handled. I’ll give you an example — I once slipped away during drinks to ask the bar for a champagne bottle for a spray shot. They handed it over without a second thought. That’s the kind of team this is.

What Makes The Old Kent Barn Great for Photography
The barn’s huge windows flood the space with natural light throughout the day — a genuine gift for photography. The gardens and gazebo give you variety for portraits without ever needing to travel far. In summer, the landscaped grounds and flowers provide beautiful backdrops. In winter, the warm candlelit interior creates something moodier and more intimate.
And when the light drops — when golden hour hits the front driveway — it’s one of those moments where the venue just gives you everything.
Photographing a Wedding at The Old Kent Barn
I arrive early to scout light and find the best morning locations. I photograph getting ready, the ceremony — whether that’s in the Pavilion or the New Barn — and then use the gardens for couple portraits and group shots in the afternoon. By the time evening arrives and the reception kicks off, I know exactly where to be and when.
I’ve photographed multiple weddings here and every single one has been different. Different couples, different light, different moments. That’s a sign of a venue that gives you space to have your own day rather than following a formula.
