VENUE GUIDE

Wedding Photographer at Broome Park Hotel, Kent

Bride getting makeup done for wedding day.

I’m James, a Kent wedding photographer based in Ramsgate. Broome Park is one of those venues where I genuinely have to remind myself to keep moving — the building is so striking that it’s easy to spend the whole morning just working the architecture. That sounds like a problem, but it isn’t. It means there’s almost no bad angle, no dull moment and no shortage of images that look genuinely impressive without trying.

It’s a proper grand English manor house: Grade I listed, built in 1635, set in 65 acres of Kent parkland. Walk through the front door and you’re immediately in a building with centuries of weight and character — ornate ceilings, panelled rooms, sweeping staircases. As a photographer, that gives you a huge amount to work with before a single guest has arrived.

About Broome Park Hotel

Broome Park Hotel sits near Canterbury in the Kent countryside, surrounded by 65 acres of grounds that include formal gardens, woodland walks and open parkland. The house itself was built in 1635 and is one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Kent — it was once home to Lord Kitchener, the face of the famous “Your Country Needs You” poster.

Today it operates as a hotel and country club, which means your guests can stay on-site and make a proper weekend of it. The venue can host up to 200 guests for a wedding reception, with various ceremony and dining spaces available across the main house and grounds.

What makes Broome Park unique?

It’s the combination of scale and history in a setting that still feels genuinely warm. A lot of grand venues have the grandeur but not the warmth — Broome Park manages both. The ceremony rooms inside the main house have original features you can’t replicate: high ornate ceilings, carved stonework, rooms that have been hosting important occasions for nearly 400 years.

Outside, the formal gardens and parkland give you something completely different — open, green, with the manor rising behind everything. The contrast between the formal interior and the sweeping exterior means there’s almost always something visually interesting to shoot regardless of the weather or time of day.

Being a hotel makes a practical difference too. When your family can stay on-site, get ready in rooms with beautiful natural light and linger a little longer, the day tends to feel more relaxed — and relaxed couples make for much better photographs.

Photographing a Wedding at Broome Park

The main house exterior is the obvious centrepiece, and it rewards time. The stone facade, the formal approach, the building set against open parkland — all of it creates strong, confident images that hold up well. I tend to use the interior staircases and hallways for quieter, more intimate portraits, then work outward through the formal gardens and grounds as the day opens up.

For getting ready shots, the hotel rooms can be excellent if the light is good — worth requesting a room on the right side of the building when you book. The ceremony rooms can be quite dark depending on which space is used, which is something I plan around technically so the atmosphere is preserved rather than blown out.

Documentary-style shooting suits Broome Park well. There’s a natural rhythm to the day there — guests exploring the grounds, the house pulling people in different directions — that creates good moments without needing to engineer them.
