Wedding Photographer at The Vines of Rochester
About The Vines of Rochester

I’m James, a Kent wedding photographer based in Ramsgate. The Vines of Rochester is about forty minutes from me and it’s a venue I know well. If you’re getting married here and want honest, relaxed photography that captures the day as it actually happened, get in touch to check my availability.
The Vines of Rochester is one of those venues that surprises you. You know you’re heading into the historic centre of Rochester, you know the building has history — but you don’t quite expect the gardens. Step through into the grounds and there’s a quiet, secluded quality to the space that feels completely separate from the town outside. It’s genuinely lovely, and it photographs beautifully.
I’ve photographed at The Vines before, and it’s a venue I always enjoy working at. The combination of a characterful historic building, well-kept gardens with an outdoor ceremony option, and — it has to be said — some of the best food at any wedding venue in Kent, makes it a brilliant choice for couples who want something with real substance to it.

About The Vines of Rochester
The Vines is set in The Old Archdeaconry, a restored historic building right in the centre of Rochester — one of Kent’s most atmospheric towns, with the cathedral and castle a short walk away. The venue has kept the character of the original building while creating a space that works beautifully for modern weddings: intimate enough to feel personal, polished enough to feel special.
The ceremony space holds up to 80 guests, with the evening reception extending to 120. There are 12 on-site bedrooms, which is genuinely useful — having the wedding party staying on-site changes the feel of the morning and the evening considerably. And the food is outstanding. Not “wedding food” in the generic sense, but food that guests actually talk about afterwards.
What Makes The Vines Great for Photography
Rochester itself is an asset that many couples don’t fully use. The cathedral, the castle, the high street with its independent character — if there’s time for portraits beyond the venue, there are exceptional locations within a few minutes’ walk. The combination of The Vines’ own garden with the wider town setting gives real variety throughout the day.
Inside the building, the restored architecture provides rich, textured backdrops — the kind of photographic material that purpose-built function venues simply can’t offer. Period detail, natural light from original windows, a sense of genuine history. Combined with the garden outside, you have two very different photographic environments within steps of each other.
The scale of the venue also works in the photographer’s favour. Up to 80 guests for the ceremony means a room that’s full without being overwhelming. Emotions are visible, moments are close, nothing gets lost in a crowd.

Photographing a Wedding at The Vines of Rochester
I work in a documentary style — which means I’m following the day rather than directing it. I arrive early, stay close, and work quietly through everything: getting ready, the ceremony, the drinks reception in the garden, the meal, the speeches, the evening. I’m looking for genuine moments rather than constructed ones, and The Vines — with its relaxed, intimate atmosphere — generates those naturally.
For couple portraits, the garden and the surrounding Rochester streets both offer strong options. I usually aim for the golden hour window during the evening reception, when the light is at its warmest and the couple are at their most relaxed. Rochester in evening light, with the cathedral in the background, is a genuinely exceptional setting.
Weddings at The Vines tend to have a warmth and intimacy to them that comes through in the photographs. The venue attracts couples who care about the details — and that always makes for a better set of images.

The Vines of Rochester — Wedding Photographer FAQs
Have you photographed at The Vines of Rochester before?
Yes — I’ve photographed at The Vines and it’s a venue I know well. The building, the gardens, the light at different times of year — all of it. It’s a venue I always enjoy working at, and the results speak for themselves.
Is The Vines of Rochester good for outdoor ceremonies?
Yes. The gardens at The Vines provide a beautiful outdoor ceremony space, secluded from the street and well-maintained. The combination of the garden setting and the historic building on all sides makes for a genuinely atmospheric ceremony backdrop.
Can you do wedding portraits in Rochester town centre?
Absolutely, and I’d encourage it if there’s time. Rochester cathedral, the castle grounds, and the character of the high street all offer exceptional portrait locations a short walk from the venue. With the right timing — usually the golden hour window during the reception — you can get images that really use the location.
What is the capacity at The Vines of Rochester?
Up to 80 guests for the ceremony and seated wedding breakfast, with the evening reception extending to 120. There are 12 on-site bedrooms, which is a real bonus for the wedding party.
How far in advance should I book a photographer for The Vines?
Twelve to eighteen months is a sensible guide for peak season. Summer weekends at venues this size book up quickly. That said, I do sometimes have availability at shorter notice — it’s always worth getting in touch to check, whatever your timeline.
Are you based near Rochester?
I’m based in Ramsgate in East Kent, about forty minutes from Rochester. I cover the whole of Kent and the South East, including Medway, Canterbury, Thanet and everywhere in between. No travel surcharges within Kent.
